Except in townships with fewer than four miles of road, the highway commissioner is responsible for maintenance of all roads and bridges in the district that are not part of any other government road system. A township road district is, in many aspects, a separate government. Neither the township board of trustees nor the township supervisor has any jurisdiction, or authority, over the highway commissioner and/or employees of the road district.
The Mt. Vernon Township Highway Department maintains 68 miles of road. The Highway Department also maintains 3 railroad overpasses, 18 bridges over 20 feet in length, and 20+ culverts.
Some of the duties of the Highway Department include:
-
Road repairs and resurfacing
-
Signage repair and replacement
-
Roadside mowing
-
Winter snow and ice control
-
Maintenance of ditches and culverts
