The objective of this website is to increase the awareness and accessibility of information about the duties. services, and programs of Mount Vernon Township. By law, Illinois townships are charged with three basic functions:
- Maintenance of all roads and bridges within its jurisdiction
- Providing general assistance for the indigent
- The assessment of real property for the basis of local taxation
Beyond those services established by state law, township government provides various other services throughout the state. Mount Vernon Township believes in the sound fiscal management of the taxpayers money and in the open communication of all township affairs with the residents of the township.
Mount Vernon Township was officially organized September 10, 1869. Mount Vernon Township is one of 16 townships in Jefferson County, Illinois. As of the 2010 census, its population was 14,237. Mount Vernon Township covers an area of 37.27 square miles; of this 36.98 square miles (99.22%) is land and 0.29 (0.78%) is water.
